Heavy Rain is Quantic Dream's third title released in 2010, exclusively for the PlayStation 3.
Heavy Rain is a dramatic thriller modeled after film noir. It features four protagonists involved with solving the mystery of the Origami Killer a serial killer who uses extended periods of rainfall to drown his victims.
Ethan Mars is trying to save his son from the killer, while investigative journalist Madison Paige, FBI profiler Norman Jayden and private detective Scott Shelby are each trying to track down clues to the Origami Killer's identity. The player interacts with the game via Quick Time Events (QTEs) as well as more traditional character movements and synchronized movements dictated by on screen prompts. The player's decisions and actions during the game affect the narrative, main characters can be killed, and certain actions may lead to different scenes and endings.
Like Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy the player is prompted to perform Quick Time Events to complete action scenes and other tasks although these events are presented in a more naturalistic and comfortable manner for the player. Unlike previous titles Heavy Rain does not involve an apocalyptic cold snap. Also unlike Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy when one of the four playable characters in Heavy Rain is killed or sidelined the story continues.
Again largely positive. Some critics pointed out plot holes and technical issues though more were impressed with the scope and ambition of the game. Metacritic, an aggregate review site, listed it at 87 out of 100 with a user score of 6.8.
