Heavy Rain is Quantic Dream's third title. It was released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in 2010.

Premise[]

Heavy Rain is a dramatic thriller modeled after film noir. It features four protagonists involved with solving the mystery of the Origami Killer, a serial killer who uses extended periods of rainfall to drown his victims.

Ethan Mars is trying to save his son from the killer, while investigative journalist Madison Paige, FBI profiler Norman Jayden, and private detective Scott Shelby are each trying to track down clues to the Origami Killer's identity. The player interacts with the game via Quick Time Events (QTEs) as well as more traditional character movements and synchronized movements dictated by on-screen prompts. The player's decisions and actions during the game affect the narrative, main characters can be killed, and certain actions may lead to different scenes and endings.

Gameplay[]

Like Fahrenheit, the player is prompted to perform Quick Time Events to complete action scenes and other tasks, although these events are presented in a more naturalistic and comfortable manner for the player. Unlike previous titles, Heavy Rain does not involve an apocalyptic cold snap. Also unlike Fahrenheit, when one of the four playable characters in Heavy Rain is killed or sidelined, the story continues.

Reception[]

As with Quantic Dream's past games, critical reception for Heavy Rain was largely positive. Although some critics pointed out plot holes and technical issues, more were impressed with the scope and ambition of the game. Metacritic, an aggregate review site, listed it at 87 out of 100 based on 107 reviews, with a user score of 7.7.[1]
